 Jackson History

First settled in 1792 by French-Canadian trader Louis LeFleur, Jackson was primarily a trading post during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.   Originally known as Parkerville, Jackson was made the capital of the State primarily for its central location.

Peter Van Dorn planned the city in a checkerboard pattern that was a favorite of Thomas Jefferson's.  This alternated city blocks with parks and other open spaces, giving it a checkerboard feel.  However, the city has changed over the years and has not retained the original checkerboard quality.

In 1839, Jackson saw to the passing of the first law to allow married women to own and administer to their own property.  Because Jackson is not on the Mississippi River , it developed through railways rather than waterways.  Jackson remained a small town until the 1970s, when large-scale growth occurred.

Today, Jackson is home to several different industries, including: electrical equipment and machinery, processed food and primary and fabricated metal products.  The area surrounding Jackson is made up primarily of agricultural development of livestock, soybeans, cotton and poultry.

The Jackson school system is made up of public and private schools.  The public school system is operated by the Jackson Separate School District .  The Hinds County School System  serves Byram, Raymond, Utica and Terry .  The city of Clinton operates its own public school system and the schools have outstanding ratings.

Jackson is the home to
Jackson State University , Millsaps College , Belhaven College and the University of Mississippi School of Medicine , Health Sciences and Dental School .  Clinton is the home of Mississippi College Mississippi College also operates the Mississippi College School of Law in downtown Jackson .
